the turning point in the process of growing up is when you discover the core of strength within you that survives all hurt.

promise me that all you say is true, that's all I ask of you.

Something like 2 or 3 miles with Stephanie, laced with frequent stops, 7 jello shots, 3 tunnels, 1 wade through a trash-filled creek, 1 freeway crossing, 1 "lost car," and a few scaling of hills. This was a fantastic adventure (I dare not call it a run, because it wasn't really...), especially because I was really wanting an adventure (and copious amounts of sleep) after presenting at group meeting.

Swimming with Brian in the AM. I didn't keep track of the yardage, and we didn't finish the workout. Was tired... went to sleep pretty early last night, but then woke up and couldn't fall asleep again.. same old story.

PM: Clara drove to the gym (after practicing driving for a while), and we attempted to run around the north field after breaking in. But, my (I think it is) IT band (that same hip thing on my left side that has been bothering me) felt like it was going to get (more) injured, so then we stopped after 7 minutes and stretched. Then we did another lap around, but it was still bothering me, so then we stopped, and switched to doing abs. Then I got hungry, and left Clara to run with Ian. And then I had ice cream.

Off.
Ennui unbridled and time forsaken,
In SURF seminars and nerves shake,
In the thirst that chases consumption of salty jalapeno cheese loafs,
Is it a mistake
to get lost in the long walks at night
taken?

23.6 miles biking, to the river trail and back. Damn, it's hot outside. I think I might have gotten burned, despite the copious amounts of sunscreen I applied before leaving. I also kind of wiped out in Monrovia, when a car was backing out and not looking, so then I went onto the sidewalk to avoid a collision. But I guess my wheel got stuck as I was getting onto the sidewalk, and then my bike just kind of fell over. Somehow, I managed to get off the bike before it did that, so nothing happened to me. Was just mildly frightening, though.

also, I'm kind of a champion, in that I get chain grease on myself before even setting out for my rides.

Saturday, Sunday: Off. Observing animals, cooking pesto ravioli from scratch, baking tarts, eating, movie-watching, grinning, and just generally being happy.

maybe we're crazy, probably.

34.2 miles running, 3000 yards swimming.

11.8 miles, 95 minutes. Have I mentioned that Patrician is my favorite run? And every time I've done it has been different! Decided to come back through the arroyo today. I started out considering upper arroyo, but it was calling to me. I really really enjoy the flat, downhill, and rolling hills (although they do make me breath heavily and winded), and running into the sunset. And watching the sun set over the rose bowl and various golf courses. Right middle bottom calf, left hamstring were sore. And I almost got run over by a car while jay-walking... oopsie poopsie... But other than that, it was a pretty fantastic run.

On a separate note, I think I run my runs like progression runs (Stephanie was talking about progression runs). Well, it was 18 mins at Singer Park, and then 35 mins turning onto Patrician. Then the hills made me slower, to 62 mins when I reached the 5k loop. But then in the Arroyo it was pretty fantastic again. And then coming home was pretty ok.

3000 yards (I think). 500 fr, 800 IM kick, 300 drill/drill/swim, 2x300 pull, 8 50's cycle through IM, 6x100. I can't remember all of what I did. I would have preferred to sleep today. I feel like it's easier to make commitments to other committed people than yourself.

6.7 miles, 52 minutes (I think) with Brian. Return of The night run. I just really wanted to run, after getting back from watching Despicable Me. It's pretty cute. Started out kind of fast - was not quite what I expected when he said "slow run" but I was like alright...; legs were pretty feeling turning onto Oak Knoll, and it slowed down a lot on Huntington. Now my quads and outer hips/butt are sore, too.

Wednesday, August 11, 2010
off. Staining and microscopes and qPCR's.. oh my! gluts and general legs were sore walking around lab.

Thursday, August 12, 2010
11.3 miles. Left butt/hip was really hurting, legs were dead/tight, and generally no good. Stretched for a while at Rose Bowl. Then the way home was ok. Got not enough sleep, and it was a miserable day. But, what started as an incredibly shitty day ended in an incredibly amazing and surreal way. I am thankful for those things in life that make you smile and brighten your world.

4.4 miles. Stopped at Lacy to stretch out the hip. And then I fell asleep for a bit. And then headed back. Legs are dead.

Saturday and Sunday: off. Baking, eating, cooking and researching.

if you put down your pen, leave the worries behind, then the moment will come, and the memory will shine.

20 miles biking (Chantry), with Clara. Legs felt less fresh today than they did when I did this last week. But, I broke the 40 mph when coming down that long straight part at the end of the descent! And I was stuck behind a car (never imagined that ever happening to me - it's usually the other way around) for a good bit of the way down right before the end, too.

Tuesday, August 3, 2010
Swim in the AM with Brian. I'm not sure of the yardage - it wasn't very much. Was mostly strokework for back and free. I was rather miserable for the whole workout, though... I was mostly wishing I were still in the comfort of my bed. And then I felt really shitty all day, because I couldn't fall asleep at night.

Wednesday, August 4, 2010
Off.

Thursday, August 5, 2010
3800 yards. Swim in the AM with Brian. Probably the first workout I've ever written, and I think it was ok.

Friday, August 6, 2010
15 miles in 123 minutes. (I forgot to start my watch between Singer Park and Orange Grove, so that time isn't completely accurate, but whatever...). Holy shit! That's the longest run I've ever done :). And it felt pretty damn good. Even the hills seemed pretty friendly, today. And my stomach didn't complain. The weather was pretty perfect, once I crossed the bridge onto Patrician. Today started out terribly, and then I decided that I needed to go on a run. I set out to do Patrician, but then I got a bit lost when I went down the wrong street and got confused, and then went to the Rose bowl, and was feeling inclined to do the 5k loop. And I saw Stephanie! I was wondering if that was her, but she wasn't moving very fast, so then I didn't call out her name until I approached closer, and then it turned out to be her :). So I finished the loop, and then got some water, stretched out my calves and left hamstring, and then I trotted home.

Saturday and Sunday: Off.
