the turning point in the process of growing up is when you discover the core of strength within you that survives all hurt.

First day of school, woohoo.
In the PM: 400-800-1600-1200-800-400 at Lacy.
1:36, 3:12, 6:23, 4:45, 2:59, 1:22(?) respectively.
My legs felt pretty good today (and fresh)... hm, I wonder why... at some points, I felt like I could have gone faster (cardio-wise) but my legs only went so fast. It felt like a good workout. Sylvia went with me for the 800, which was awesome. Then afterward I did an extra 800 with Best (3:07), yay!
Workout aside, today was (is still) very miserable. I have some type of stomach bug, food poisoning? perhaps, and I have had an upset stomach and been to the bathroom a lot today. On the way to my 7pm class, I was also really freezing (like I was shivering uncontrollably on the way there, and also while sitting in the classroom), so I came back after the OM and took a nap. I just kind of rolled myself up in my blanket and hoped I would warm up, and it took a while. And my temperature is a bit high. Ugh. Apparently I ate all the wrong types of foods today, for an upset stomach. I hope it will go away soon. Really soon.

53 minutes, easy pace. To San Gabriel, via Rose Villa.
Ran with the gang until the intersection of Roosevelt & San Pasqual, and then I kept going for a bit, since I was supposed to get in a longer run today. I really like Rose Villa, ever since Susan showed us that one morning. I think from San Gabriel onwards coming back, I was just jogging along. I don't know; I was feeling really tired and like I was going to collapse because I didn't have any energy. Anyways, it was no good. When I got back, everyone was doing drills and striders, so I just sat there and pretended to stretch. Then we did some abs.

(3 hard, 2 medium, 3 hard, 2 easy) x3 at Lacy Park.

I ran with Masha, Sylvia, and Clara (for some of it). Oof, it was a hot and dry one today, but it was a good workout. I ran with Masha for the first set, then for the second set I ran with Clara to pull her along - she led the first one, and then Sylvia led the second of the second set while I ran with Clara about 15m behind Masha and Sylvia. For the third set, we all ran together for the first one, with Masha leading, and for the last one Clara dropped off (booooo) and I led. I'm really excited to see Sylvia race. I think everyone seems a bit tired, especially because it was hot, but it felt good to be running in pretty tight pack. Clara, get your head (back) in to XC!
Side note: I probably shouldn't have eaten dairy (those nachos were so enticing, though!) so early, because my stomach was clearly not happy. Argh.

Race: Regional Preview and Pomona, 25:58
Survived. I think I kind of went into this race without any expectations, and a goal of finishing without 'pooping out.' This course was pretty flat, and quite repetitive. I think I got out pretty well, and the first mile felt pretty good (6:29). Then I got a stitch during the second mile, and felt that I slowed down considerably, as was matched by the time (7:00). At one point, Ian told me that the group in front of me was all-SCIAC, but I consciously (I think) just made a tired face and just kind of continued onward. The third mile was even slower... (7:20) so I averaged a 6:55 pace. Next time, I need to run more consistently (i.e. not slow down) but I'm happy that I finished the race.

Unintended.

52 minutes along the river, legs felt great after basically a whole day of sitting.

800-1600-2400-800 on the track.
Oof, this workout was kind of miserable. Maybe because I didn't get too much sleep the night before, on Sunday night. Warm-up run, then drills, 4 striders, stretches, shin walks, and then got to business.
800, 1:42/3:29. Started off a bit slowly. I was contemplating running another one, just so that it wasn't so slow, but by the time I got to 800 for the 1600, I felt like it was fine, and I wanted to do the 1600.
1600, 1:35/3:13/4:49/6:27. So I tried harder for this one, and it felt pretty good.
2400, 3:16/6:45/8:34/10:14. This one felt so long, and I really felt like stopping, so I kind of paused after 1600, then finished up. My legs felt so tired after about 3 laps, and the first mile of it was 6:46. Then it just got slower from there.
800: 1:43/3:23. Didn't really have much of a kick, and was glad to be done.

I have many promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep.

AM: Huntington, coming back on Los Robles. Ran with Masha, Phyllis, Clara, and Sylvia joined us on Huntington. I ran with Clara on the way back, and the pace slowed a bit on the way up Los Robles. I think my legs were tired, too.

PM: jogged around the north field for ~15 mins, then did drills and medicine ball exercises, leg swings.

Tuesday, September 16, 2009

AM: 25 min tempo run in the Arroyo. I ran with Susan, Masha, and Sylvia (and Megumi, kind of). We ran the first loop all together, which was really nice - Masha led. 7:15 for the first mile (our goal pace was 7:25), and we kept this pace for 10 minutes. The next 10 minutes were supposed to be at 6:55 pace or so. We came through the start of the loop (2.5k) at 11:10? (ah, I can't remember!) and then the end of the second loop was 22:10 (5k). Then the last 3 minutes was at race pace intensity. We finished 25 minutes as we made the right turn onto the straight rocky part, and I was all geared up to work up that part, but then Susan said stop. Oops... I didn't have a kick in today's workout, because I thought we were doing 2.5 loops. But that's ok, I still felt like I went hard on the 5 last minutes. This lady with her dogs took up the whole path, and didn't even look. Susan did exasperated arms as we passed them =/. The weather was very pleasant today, and I felt pretty good. I like being warm as start a workout, so I wish we had jogged the loop, and then gone straight into the run, instead of stopping to stretch and getting cold again.

PM: Jogging around the north field, and core and medicine balls. I can do 4kg now :). I was late, since I was in lab, so I didn't do the jogging.

Wednesday, September 16, 2009

AM: Easy run, new route! Down Wilson, Down Del Mar to Hill, and then left on Rose Villa. This is a nice street. The sun was coming up, and in our eyes, but it was very pleasant. We weaved our way down to San Pasqual, and ran to San Gabriel (the street). Then we came back on Lombardy. On Lombardy, my legs started feeling quite tired. Ran with Masha and Clara towards the end. Sylvia, Susan, and Megumi were also running with us. Megumi has a fast base pace!

PM: Jogged around the north field, then did the 'north field special' which consists of doing 4 different abs/drills stations. Between each station, jog a lap and a quarter. Then weightroom and abs afterward.

Thursday, September 17, 2009

AM: 400-800-800-1600-800-400 at Lacy. Times: 1:41, 3:18, 3:16, 3:15/6:28, 3:13, 1:22, respectively (minutes:seconds).
I rather enjoy doing interval workouts. We did awesome pack running for the first 400 and 800, starting from the picnic benches and ending at the bell. My group was Masha, Susan, Sylvia, and Clara. We strung out a little more as the workout went on. My legs were super tired this morning when I got up, and I hadn't slept very well, because I kept waking up and my bug bites were itchy. But then I was feeling pretty good during the workout. Especially the 16, and the last 4. On the 800, we pack ran again. It was very nice. Sylvia led the first part, then Masha, and then I finished it off. Awesome!

PM: swimming, aqua-jogging, breathing exercises in the pool. Then medicine ball exercises and abs on the south field.

Friday, September 18, 2009

AM: Pre-race. Hillcrest loop, up Los Robles.

PM: no running. Team pictures.

Saturday, September 19, 2009
Race at Riverside! I had a good race (20:06). Didn't PR, but it was hot (we raced at 9am today, instead of the invitational at 7:30 like previous years), and I still feel like it was a good race. Susan ran the first 2 miles to pace me and Masha. 6:15 at the first mile. It felt quick, but not grueling-ly so. The pacing of the pack was weird - I passed a ton of people in the firs and especially second mile (12:51). By the start of the third mile, the pace was pretty much set. I passed this one girl, and then stayed with a CMS girl and a girl in an Orange jersey. I passed them once, and then on the final stretch I was passed back, but I couldn't do that much about it. The intensity felt much better than it did at Redlands last week, where I felt like I was going a steady pace. But today was more bordering on uncomfortable. I kept thinking that I would die towards the end, but I made it, without dying too much. I think I slowed a bit on the third mile, because I was getting tired, but other than that, I don't have much that I didn't like about it.

I don't really know the meaning, cause, and attributes of fall

Monday, September 7, 2009
AM: 60 minutes (well, 59:28) easy in the Arroyo with Masha. Heated the shins before, and they felt fine :).

PM: 15 minutes around the track, barefoot on the grass. Then we did Ian's drills:
1. high knees, transitioning into a short strider
2. butt kicks, with a strider
3. A skips
4. B skips
5. karaokes (both low and high, where you cross one leg high)
6. German drills:
a) 2 steps followed by a high knee, repeat. So basically high knee on every 3rd step
b) butt kick on every third step
c) crazy one: alternating high knee and butt kick - step step high knee, step step step step butt kick. or something like that.
I might be missing some drills? But I can't remember... but it was exciting! quite a few showed up - all the frosh guys, Andrew, Ryan, Chief, Garrett (8 mins late =D), and then Clara came a bit later.

AM: Intervals around the 800m loop at Lacy Park: 800-1600-1600-800
My respective times/splits were 3:06, 3:11/6:35, 3:20/6:44, 3:08.
I didn't heat the shins, so on the warm up they kind of hurt, but I didn't feel them at all during the workout :). Legs felt pretty tired, and it was really hard especially on the back stretch of the interval, when we hit the grass before the picnic benches, to the slight uphill around the tree. I remember when we did these last year, I was more energetic and did them fast, but also had a kick at the end. But today, it was just hanging on, trying to not let Susan get too far ahead of me. I guess I was running with Sam and Stephanie last year, but this year I was pretty much running alone. Masha was not too far behind, and Susan was a bit too far forward, so I think Masha should run with.

PM: around the north field barefoot for about 20 minutes, really slowly. Best is back for good! Then dynamic stretches (hamstring walking, leg swings), and medicine ball exercises, followed by some light abs.

Wednesday, Sepetember 9, 2009

AM: 45 minutes, modified Hillcrest loop, easy. Legs are tired, so an easy run was very welcome. So walking around, the top of my foot has been hurting, and not really getting better since Saturday. I've been icing in the whirlpool. Erin said probably minor tendonitis. Ice after, heat before, and ultrasound.

PM: 25 minutes easy, in the neighborhood (I don't remember the exact route), followed by drills. Legs felt really heavy and not good. Also, I could feel my toe in my shoe - I ripped a little bit of toenail off my pinky toe, and I guess it got swollen. My right butt was feeling sore, so I just kind of ignored it, since things get sore. But then during drills it started getting numb, which wasn't good. I stopped drills and stretched, and then later Erin told me it was probably a tight periformis, which was clamping on my sciatic nerve. Perhaps related is the outside of my right calf/ankle area. It's just tender and sore. Yeah, so I iced those areas, and see how it feels tomorrow. Erin was like "If it hurts even a bit, I might suggest an alternative workout, because otherwise if it gets tight, then you won't be able to run." Sounds scary... but it didn't feel that bad, just a bit aching/ annoying.

Thursday, September 10, 2009

AM: San Marino Hills workout.
Mm, hills. I really need to work on hills - I can do (and like doing) short hills, but if it's longer than about 30 meters, then I get really tired. Best was awesome, and I was trying to run with her for the first 2, then she got a cramp.
1: Euston -> Stratford, stopping at Oxford
2. Up Oxford
3. Patton
4. Shenandoah
5. Virginia
6. Oak Knoll
(7 - not a hill. Tempo run on Hillcrest, from one end on Oak Knoll to the other)
I heated the ankle before hand, and iced the butt too (felt it ever so slightly a few times this morning, but it was so much better than yesterday). Felt it a bit on the warmup, but not too bad. On some of the hills, I think after Oxford, it hurt a bit, but then went away when we started the next interval. Then it was mostly fine. I'm sure it will be fine - I just iced afterward.

PM: No running, just some breathing exercises in the pool, and drills in the pool. Then we did some stretches on the track field, and medicine balls. I can use the 4kg ball, now! :)

Friday, September 11, 2009

AM: Prerace, the Hillcrest loop. This run felt pretty good, aside from sore calves and tired legs still; I woke up naturally after 6 hours of sleep, and didn't fall asleep again, so I just lay in bed for a while :(.

PM: no running, just had a team meeting about the course and goals, and other orders of business. Tomorrow is our first race, at Redlands! 4.5K for girls, and 6K for guys.

goals:
1. Run a consistent race (don't sag too much in the middle mile)
2. Start thinking about the end race before I can physically see the end - I tend to wait until I can see, and know that I can finish hard before I start 'kicking'.
(and I can't remember the third one I wrote down. I want to bring Masha with me, as far as possible, but that's not what I wrote).

I'm worried about lab stuff. So I was there for most of today, minus lunch and practice. Still need to go back tonight in a few hours, to streak some plates. My sleeping needs have been kind of wacko. I honestly don't think I've slept fewer than 7 hours any night (except the night my mom got here), yet I am so sleepy all the time - yesterday, I just didn't go to lab because I was feeling terrible. I think I'm eating fine. Ugh, what's wrong.?

Saturday, September 12, 2009

This was the first race of the season. Outcome: 20:02? I don't feel like I had a bad race, but the time was just slow, and I ran slowly. The start was pretty funky - they had us standing around in the sun for about 10 minutes while we waited. And then it was boom go. I think my first mile was 6:50, but I have no idea where the mile marker was. The course was extremely flat, so I should have been good on this course, but I don't know. I think my legs are tired. Oof.

I'm not obsessed, just Impolite.

Monday, August 31, 2008
AM: 4? miles, elliptical. Awful, awful air. I emerged from my room and was met by the unpleasant smell of smoke in the air. Apparently the mountains are burning down. So we practiced inside: leaping and jogging in the multipurpose room. Then ellipticalled (the thing said 4 miles, but I don't believe it) for half an hour.
PM: All athletic activities were canceled for the rest of the day, because the air was so bad, so no PM practice.

Tuesday, September 1, 2008
AM: 9.2 miles, Manhattan beach (65 minutes? I didn't have a watch)
Drove to Manhattan beach, and ran along the bark trail (I really liked this last time, and was hoping I'd get to come back) and the Strand? (beach boardwalk). We started out kind of fast, even though it was supposed to be an easy run. But I felt pretty good, so I was running with Masha and Susan. I can't wait until Clara gets back into it and runs with us. She kind of dropped off (too) soon, so Stephanie ran with her. When we reached the boardwalk (concrete) it was pretty fast, and then at some point, we saw Garrett asking for directions from some guy. Susan was like 'omg...' and then I went ahead and ran with Garrett, because I was feeling pretty good. Towards the end, though, I was getting pretty tired, and the pace dropped off a lot. Rosecrans took forever to appear, and I really wanted to stop! But it was a great run.
PM: no practice

Wednesday, September 2, 2008
AM: 43 minutes (~5 miles), Griffith Park.
Drove to Griffith Park, and we did an out and back. We ran out for 25 minutes, trying to run as a pack. It was supposed to be easy, but I feel like our easy runs are not actually that easy when Susan is there. We were trying to make Clara run with us. On the way back, we took turns leading (me, Masha, Clara, Stephanie, and then Susan) for 4 minute intervals each. Clara was great on her interval, and then dropped off again =[. At the end of Susan's interval, we did a bit of a kick, and Stephanie out-kicked me at the end. Ah! But it felt good to be moving. Felt the shins a bit, but other than that, the run felt excellent.
PM: Weights and abs. We learned how to do some medicine ball exercises, and softball massages.

Thursday, September 3, 2008
AM: To lacy and back, ~3 miles.
Boy, it felt good to do an easy run! Pack running with everyone, so it was a very relaxed pace.
PM: 50 minutes with Masha and Mia in the San Bernadino National Forest. We drove up here to go camping at Heart Bar campground, kind of by Big Bear. There was also a fire here, but pretty far from us. The air was wonderful, compared to Pasadena, and I didn't feel the altitude too much on the run. There was a steady hill up a fire trail, after about 12 minutes. Addy was running with us for the first part, but then she had to stop and stretch out her calves. Ah, it was so pretty! Especially on the way down. Mia ran with us the whole way, awesome. Feeling the shins, and would have been thankful for an ice bath. I was eyeing the bathroom as we ran a loop around the campground when we got back.

Friday, September 4, 2008
AM: 50 minutes (15 minute warm-up, 10 minute surge, 5 minute jog, 10 minute surge, then run back), the same route as yesterday's afternoon run. Ran in a group with Masha and Stephanie and Mia. I was really not feeling it on the surge, and I dropped off pretty quickly from Stephanie and Masha, so I ran with Mia and encouraged her. I don't know, my legs just felt dead, and I was breathing really hard. Grr. So we regrouped on the 5 minutes easy, and asked if we could take turns leading. So we did that 2.5 minutes each - Masha, Mia (she went back after that, since she was doing 45 minutes), and then me and then Stephanie. I dropped off after Stephanie took over, but they were in sight. Ugh, hills. The way back was good. Tired, but good.
Aside: I think the camping trip ended up working out, and I'm glad that Ian was able to accompany us, and that we were able to go.

Saturday, September 5, 2008
6.5 miles, Huntington coming back on Oak Knoll.
I haven't done this run in a while... I used to do it at night, good times. Ran with Masha, Stephanie, Phyllis, and Perrin (who went up Virginia). Not the greatest run. Actually, it was rather miserable for the most part. Shins hurt the whole way, and my right foot (probably correlated). Didn't sleep very much quality sleep, because my mom arrived around 2am, and she was staying with me, so I woke up then, to let her in. Was supposed to be an easy run, but it didn't feel super easy. Stephanie brought her huge earbud speakers, which must have been quite a sight. I'm going to start heating in the morning and do theraband exercises for the shins.

Total mileage for this week: ~38 miles
(actually, I am kind of obsessed with Plushgun's "Impolite")
